Hikari Tsuzuraori Residential House
Hikari Tsuzuraori Residential House is a distinctive residential architecture project located in Kamakura, Japan, that masterfully balances traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design principles. Designed by Japanese architect Hironari Itoi, this 139.33-square-meter vacation home exemplifies innovative spatial planning through its unique four-part core structure, which creates an intricate interplay between light and shadow. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, responds ingeniously to the challenges of a flag lot surrounded by neighboring buildings by incorporating staggered cores and alternately folded roof slopes that create strategic apertures for natural illumination. The two-story residence presents a thoughtful duality in its spatial arrangement: the lower floor embraces darkness as a design element, featuring meditative Japanese-style spaces that provide refuge from urban bustle, while the upper floor celebrates movement and temporal dynamics through its dynamic interaction with natural light. This architectural composition particularly stands out for its sophisticated response to its cultural context, situated near the Great Buddha and Hase Temple, where it manages to create a private sanctuary that transitions from the daytime tourist activity to evening tranquility. The structure's innovative approach to privacy and light management is achieved through a closed exterior that contrasts with an open interior design, complemented by carefully positioned miniature gardens that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. The project, completed in January 2019, represents a harmonious fusion of opposing themes - light and dark, Western and Japanese, movement and stillness - creating a unique architectural narrative that enhances the human experience of space and time.
