High Altar Zacatecas Cathedral High Altarpiece and Ceremonial Space is a monumental architectural and sculptural masterpiece that seamlessly integrates contemporary design with historical sacred architecture. Created through the collaborative efforts of architects Claudio and Christian Gantous and sculptor Javier Marín, this remarkable installation stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of baroque and neoclassical elements within religious architectural spaces. The centerpiece of this design is a magnificent 10-meter-wide by 16.7-meter-high altarpiece, composed of 514 geometric prisms crafted from Finnish birch wood and adorned with 24-karat gold leaf, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow. The altarpiece rises majestically from an elevated presbytery designed in the shape of a Greek Cross, featuring a sophisticated arrangement of ceremonial elements including twelve Canon's seats, each crowned with bronze symbols representing the apostles' martyrdom. The altar itself is a masterful composition of red marble supported by bronze angel wings, while the entire ceremonial space is finished with European Oak planks. This Gold A' Design Award-winning project, completed in 2010, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its material selection and craftsmanship, incorporating gold from the Peñasquito en Mazapíl mine in Zacatecas, which was processed in Germany for the leaf application. The design successfully creates a transcendent spiritual atmosphere while serving as a unifying element between the cathedral's baroque façade and its austere neoclassical interior, establishing a new paradigm in contemporary religious architectural design.
