Heyuan Public Library is a significant architectural landmark located in the Heyuan Cultural Park, Guangdong Province, China, exemplifying a harmonious blend of traditional Hakka architectural elements with contemporary design principles. Designed by Paul Bo Peng and team, this 20,606-square-meter cultural institution represents a thoughtful interpretation of Southern Chinese architectural heritage while serving as a modern public knowledge center. The structure's distinctive design comprises five functional blocks arranged on sloping terrain, overlooking a central lake from the foot of a small mountain, creating an ideal feng shui positioning. The architectural composition features fortress-like external elevations with textured concrete panels and tall narrow windows, contrasting with open internal elevations that embrace natural light through a sophisticated combination of clear glass and traditional bamboo shade panels. The library's spatial organization includes 7,029 square meters of reading rooms, a 418-square-meter multi-function area, and a 1,200-square-meter audio/visual section, all designed to facilitate public engagement with literature and culture. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2018, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining cultural sensitivity with modern functionality. The design's emphasis on sustainability is evident through its passive energy-saving features, while its aesthetic approach balances traditional Hakka architectural elements with minimalist modern design, exemplified by its white color scheme and innovative use of materials.
