Heting Barbecue Restaurant and Bar is an innovative interior design project that masterfully blends Japanese culinary aesthetics with local cultural elements in Jinan, China. Located on the third floor of a commercial building, this 360-square-meter establishment represents a sophisticated fusion of barbecue restaurant, izakaya, music venue, and bar functionalities. The space, designed by Jianning Wang and team in 2019, showcases a thoughtful integration of traditional and contemporary design elements, featuring varied seating arrangements including wooden seats, a Japanese bar, and private tatami boxes that enhance dining intimacy. The design's distinctive approach employs architectural principles in interior space planning, creating an engaging spatial narrative through the careful manipulation of materials, lighting, and structural elements. Notable design features include a centrally positioned dislocated background wall that creates dramatic three-dimensional effects under carefully calibrated indirect lighting, while the use of authentic materials such as old green brick pays homage to Jinan's historical heritage. The establishment's aesthetic draws inspiration from its proximity to the Ming dynasty city wall, incorporating elements such as cherry blossoms, sand, stone, and wooden fences to create a harmonious dialogue between Japanese refinement and local cultural context. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its material selection and lighting design, successfully overcoming technical challenges to achieve a warm, atmospheric environment that encourages spatial exploration and artistic appreciation.
