Herwig Kempinger
Herwig Kempinger was a prominent Austrian artist who played a significant role in the development of Austrian modernism. He was born in 1922 in Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Kempinger was a versatile artist who worked in various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. He was known for his bold, gestural abstract paintings that combined strong abstract forms with vibrant color. Kempinger's early works were influenced by the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, which emphasized the use of surreal and dreamlike imagery. However, he soon moved away from this style and began to experiment with abstraction. His paintings from the 1950s and 1960s are characterized by their dynamic compositions, bold brushstrokes, and intense colors. In the 1970s, Kempinger began to create large-scale sculptures in bronze. These works were often abstract and featured organic shapes that seemed to grow and evolve. One of his most famous sculptures is the Tower of Power, which was created in 1970 and stands over 10 feet tall. Throughout his career, Kempinger received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the arts. He was a member of the Vienna Secession and the Austrian Association of Artists. His works are held in many public and private collections around the world.
