Hermitage Retreat Recreational Home
Hermitage Retreat Recreational Home is an exemplary architectural masterpiece that represents a harmonious blend of contemporary design and vernacular architecture, situated on a picturesque hillock within the Sahyadri mountain ranges near Pune, India. This sophisticated recreational residence, completed in 2016, encompasses 278 square meters of thoughtfully crafted living space within a 4,000-square-meter site, embodying principles of urban regionalism while maintaining deep connections to traditional architectural elements. The structure's innovative composite design integrates form-finished concrete, local basalt stone, Kadappah stone, and teak wood, featuring intricately detailed ashlar masonry that creates dynamic facades through the interplay of light and shadow. The linear open plan maximizes panoramic mountain views through edge-to-edge openings, while a long deck serves as a transitional space between the interior and natural surroundings. Distinguished by its self-sustaining capabilities and minimal environmental impact, the home incorporates passive design strategies for natural ventilation and lighting. The project, which garnered a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases exceptional spatial composition, including a contemplative toilet courtyard and an entrance court that evokes traditional 'wada' architecture, reflecting the client's aristocratic Maratha heritage while meeting contemporary lifestyle needs through innovative structural solutions and careful material selection.
