Heritage Spark Design Inspiring Toolkit

Heritage Spark Design Inspiring Toolkit is an educational design instrument specifically developed to facilitate the integration of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) into contemporary creative practices through a systematic, card-based methodology that enables users without prior knowledge of cultural heritage to engage meaningfully with traditional practices and generate innovative preservation solutions. Conceived and realized by a collaborative team led by Liang Hou at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, beginning in January 2024, this pedagogical toolkit addresses the critical challenge of ICH awareness and preservation in an era characterized by rapid technological advancement and cultural transformation. The system comprises three distinct card categories working in concert: ICH cards that introduce ten representative forms of intangible cultural heritage to establish foundational understanding, role cards that enable users to adopt diverse perspectives including those of heritage bearers and cultural practitioners to foster empathy and identify preservation challenges, and technology cards that present contemporary technological solutions to inspire innovative approaches to heritage transmission and protection. The toolkit further incorporates two collaborative thought canvases, a personal canvas in A4 format measuring 210mm x 297mm and a team canvas measuring 460mm x 960mm, designed to support both individual ideation and collective brainstorming processes. Each card measures 95mm x 133mm with a thickness of 0.3mm, produced through digital printing on 300-gram coated paper and precision die-cutting, with the complete system housed in a packaging box measuring 460mm x 320mm x 80mm for convenient storage and transportation. The development methodology integrated user research, workshop testing, and design thinking principles to refine content accessibility and functional usability, employing Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for the visual design phase before small-batch production to ensure quality control and adaptability. Heritage Spark Design Inspiring Toolkit distinguishes itself as one of the few specialized auxiliary instruments for ICH design education in China, employing a collaborative role-playing analysis method that streamlines the creative process while simultaneously serving as a promotional vehicle for cultural heritage awareness. The design addresses the complex challenge of enabling novice users to rapidly comprehend the value and essence of intangible cultural heritage while effectively stimulating empathy to identify preservation pain points from the perspective of heritage bearers, balancing knowledge dissemination with cognitive stimulation to encourage innovative contributions toward ICH futures. The toolkit's operational flow guides users through a structured process beginning with ICH card exploration to build foundational knowledge, progressing through character card engagement to examine heritage from multiple stakeholder perspectives, advancing to technology card integration to inspire diverse design solutions through contemporary technological fusion, and culminating in canvas-based collaborative ideation that supports process development and idea exchange. This systematic approach reflects contemporary pedagogical theory regarding experiential learning and design thinking methodologies, positioning the toolkit within broader educational design discourse concerning cultural preservation, creative problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The work received recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in the Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design category in 2025, an accolade that acknowledges designs meeting professional and industrial standards while demonstrating solid understanding of design principles and practical innovation that addresses real-world challenges through thoughtful design solutions. The creative team comprised Creative Director Liang Hou, Researcher Wenqi Wu, Designers Qianyu Tang, Yixuan Gao, Xiaoran Zhang, Chongjun Zhong, Songruoyao Wu, and Yingping Cao, with guidance from Tutors Zhibin Zhou and Kejun Zhang, representing an academic collaboration model that exemplifies contemporary design education's emphasis on team-based learning and interdisciplinary cooperation. Heritage Spark Design Inspiring Toolkit represents a significant contribution to the intersection of design education, cultural preservation, and innovation facilitation, demonstrating how carefully structured pedagogical instruments can bridge traditional knowledge systems with contemporary creative practices while fostering the development of culturally sensitive design thinking capabilities among students and practitioners who may lack prior exposure to heritage contexts.
