Masonry is an ancient construction technique which utilizes stone, brick, and other natural materials to create beautiful, sturdy structures. In the context of architecture, the term “head” is used to describe a block or brick which is placed at the top of a wall or pier. The head is typically larger than the other blocks or bricks and is usually placed at the end of a course or at the termination of a wall. In masonry construction, the head is typically the last block or brick placed and is used to complete the course and provide a finishing look to the structure.

As a graphic designer, the ‘head’ is an important concept for my job. It is the essential element of a design that serves as the focal point, the main attraction. It must draw the eye, but not detract too much from the rest of the work. Logos and layout must be well balanced, so that a viewer’s attention is on the head element, but not so much that other important elements of the design are overlooked. I must develop visuals that subtly guide the eye to the desired area. When I am working on a project, I aim to make the head compelling, often through the use of contrasting colors, typography, and shapes.
