Hat On The Ridge Residence And Gallery

Hat On The Ridge Residence And Gallery

Hat on the Ridge Residence and Gallery is an innovative architectural masterpiece that seamlessly integrates with its mountainous surroundings in Kamakura, Japan, designed by Kiyotoshi Mori and Natsuko Kawamura. This distinctive two-story wooden structure, measuring 6825mm in width and depth with a height of 6970mm, draws inspiration from traditional pit dwellings while incorporating contemporary design elements. The building's foundation is uniquely positioned directly on bedrock, achieved by removing soft sediment to create a semi-subterranean space that harmoniously blends with the mountain range. The structure's most striking feature is its pyramidal roof design, which creates a pillarless interior space and features four strategically flipped edges, each offering distinct views of the mountain, valley, village, and sky. The interior space is vertically diverse, with an earthen floor connecting to the bedrock and an upper level that is dramatically cut through to the ground at the corners, creating a dynamic spatial flow between levels. The gallery-like spaces on both the ground floor entrance hall and upper floor bookshelves were designed to display antiques and artwork within a residential context, allowing visitors to envision these pieces in their own living spaces. This innovative approach to combining residential and gallery functions earned the project a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional integration of form, function, and environmental context.
