Hard Disk Drives

A hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage and rotating platters. It is one of the most common types of storage devices used in personal computers, laptops, servers, and other digital devices. The hard disk drive is composed of one or more disks, also known as platters, which are coated with a magnetic material that stores the data. The platters spin at high speeds while read/write heads move across the surface of the platters to read and write data. The capacity of a hard disk drive is determined by the number of platters it has and the density of the data that can be stored on each platter. The read/write heads are controlled by an actuator arm that moves them to the correct position on the platter to read or write data. The data is organized into sectors and tracks on the platters, and the operating system of the computer uses a file system to access and manage the data. Hard disk drives have several advantages over other types of storage devices. They are relatively inexpensive, have high storage capacities, and are widely available. They also have fast read and write speeds, making them ideal for storing large files and running applications. However, they are vulnerable to physical damage, such as shock or vibration, and can fail if the read/write heads come into contact with the platters.
