Hand Still Participatory Art

Hand Still Participatory Art is an innovative social art project designed to enhance personal well-being through creative hand-based photography and community engagement. Conceived in 2021 at Keio University Graduate School in Japan, this unique artistic initiative combines elements of photography, social media interaction, and psychological well-being principles to create a globally accessible participatory art experience. The project incorporates four fundamental factors for improving well-being: Self-Actualization and Growth, Connection and Gratitude, Positive and Optimistic outlook, and Independence and Self-identity. Participants are invited to create and share their own artistic expressions by photographing hand and finger poses that represent landscapes, creatures, or abstract concepts, accompanied by thoughtful titles. This creative process not only stimulates individual artistic expression but also fosters a sense of community through social media platforms. The project's effectiveness has been validated through research involving 82 participants, demonstrating that 71% of viewers experienced enhanced creativity, while 15.5% were inspired to create their own hand-based artworks. Designed by Kenji Fujii in collaboration with Yotaro Hirahara and Mako Sugiyama, this Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Photography and Photo Manipulation Design category represents a significant innovation in the intersection of participatory art, social media, and well-being enhancement. The project's success lies in its ability to democratize artistic expression while simultaneously promoting mental wellness, making it particularly relevant in an era increasingly focused on spiritual growth and personal development rather than purely economic advancement.
