Hajra Waheed

Hajra Waheed is a Canadian artist whose works delve into the complexities of identity, memory, and history. Her multimedia pieces often incorporate found objects, archival materials, and text to create layered and thought-provoking installations. Waheed's art is deeply rooted in her personal experiences as a Muslim woman of Pakistani descent who has lived in various countries throughout her life. She draws inspiration from her travels and the diverse cultures she has encountered, as well as from her research into topics such as surveillance, propaganda, and censorship. Waheed's artistic practice is characterized by a deep engagement with the materials and processes she employs. She often spends months researching and gathering materials before embarking on a project, and her works are meticulously crafted and thoughtfully arranged. Her installations are immersive and often invite the viewer to engage with the work on multiple levels, whether through reading text, examining objects, or contemplating the overall composition. Despite the weighty themes that underpin her work, Waheed's art is also infused with a sense of playfulness and curiosity. She is constantly experimenting with new techniques and materials, and her works often incorporate unexpected elements such as light, sound, or movement. Her ability to balance serious inquiry with a sense of wonder and delight is one of the hallmarks of her practice.
