György Kepes

György Kepes is a Hungarian-born American artist, designer, and educator who made significant contributions to the fields of graphic design, photography, and visual communication. Born in 1906 in Selyp, Hungary, Kepes studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before moving to Berlin in 1930, where he worked as a graphic designer and became involved with the Bauhaus movement. In 1937, he emigrated to the United States and joined the faculty of the New Bauhaus (later known as the Institute of Design) in Chicago, where he taught until 1943. Kepes then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he founded and directed the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) from 1967 to 1972. Throughout his career, Kepes explored the intersection of art, science, and technology, advocating for the integration of visual arts into the wider context of human experience. His influential book, Language of Vision (1944), laid the groundwork for his theories on visual communication and perception, emphasizing the importance of understanding the fundamental elements of visual language. Kepes's work encompassed a wide range of media, including painting, photography, graphic design, and environmental art, and he collaborated with notable figures such as László Moholy-Nagy, Kevin Lynch, and Pietro Belluschi. His innovative approach to design education and his pioneering work in the field of visual communication left a lasting impact on generations of artists and designers.
