Gumgum Garden Restaurant Pub is an innovative interior design project that reimagines basement dining space as a tropical beach paradise, created in response to pandemic-era restrictions on travel and social gatherings. Located in the bustling heart of Taipei, adjacent to the iconic Taipei 101, this 530-square-meter establishment represents a sophisticated fusion of natural elements and urban dining culture. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, masterfully transforms a subterranean space into five distinct experiential zones: a sand-filled lounge area, an island beach bar, rock cave dining section, garden café, and jungle seat box. The interior architecture ingeniously incorporates weathered wood, authentic coral sand, and abundant exotic plants to create an immersive vacation-like atmosphere despite the absence of natural sunlight. The space overcomes significant technical challenges, including the integration of complex fire protection systems within an existing pipe network, while maintaining strict safety standards. The design's innovative approach to material usage features hand-modified tree trunks and raw wooden blocks, creating an authentic natural environment within an urban context. The versatile space is enhanced by state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment, including projection screens and sophisticated lighting systems, making it suitable for various commercial events and social gatherings. This award-winning design exemplifies how thoughtful interior architecture can transcend physical constraints to create transformative spatial experiences that address contemporary social needs while promoting wellness and relaxation in urban environments.
