A gum shield, also known as a mouthguard, is a protective device worn over the teeth and gums to prevent injury to the mouth during contact sports or other physical activities. It is typically made of a flexible material that conforms to the shape of the wearer's teeth and gums, providing a comfortable and secure fit. The primary purpose of a gum shield is to protect the teeth and gums from impact during physical activity. Without a gum shield, a blow to the mouth can result in broken or knocked-out teeth, cuts to the lips and tongue, and even jaw fractures. In addition to protecting the teeth, a gum shield can also help to prevent concussions and other head injuries by absorbing some of the force of a blow to the head. Custom-fit mouthguards are made by a dentist or other dental professional, who takes an impression of the wearer's teeth and uses it to create a mouthguard that is tailored to their individual needs. Stock mouthguards are pre-formed and come in a limited range of sizes, making them less effective at providing a secure and comfortable fit. While gum shields are most commonly associated with contact sports such as football, hockey, and boxing, they can also be used in other physical activities such as skateboarding, mountain biking, and even weightlifting. Anyone who engages in a physical activity that carries a risk of mouth injury should consider wearing a gum shield to protect their teeth and gums.
