GrowForest Educational Learning Toy
GrowForest Educational Learning Toy is an innovative educational tool designed to foster children's understanding of sustainable forestry and environmental conservation, particularly focusing on Taiwan's indigenous tree species. This comprehensive learning system, created by designers Peishan Cai, Wanling Gao, and Haochun Hu, incorporates authentic wooden components crafted from six distinct Taiwanese tree species: acacia, incense cedar, Tochigi, Taiwan fir, camphor tree, and Asian fir. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design category, uniquely engages children through a multi-sensory learning experience, allowing them to explore through touch, sight, and smell while understanding forest conservation principles. The educational set features meticulously crafted tree models with precise dimensions, complemented by an illustrated storybook that deepens children's understanding of forest conservation. Each wooden component is manufactured using a combination of CNC milling, lathe work, and manual polishing techniques, with environmentally friendly finishes that either preserve the natural wood texture or enhance it through careful treatment. The design addresses the critical global issue of deforestation and aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 15 concerning life on land. The learning system incorporates different terrain levels to demonstrate how various tree species thrive at different altitudes, creating a comprehensive educational experience that teaches both ecological concepts and specific characteristics of Taiwan's native trees. The project, developed between July 2019 and March 2020, represents a significant advancement in educational toy design, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques to create an engaging learning tool that helps children develop environmental awareness through play-based education.
