Gregory Ain
Gregory Ain was an American, Modernist architect and designer. He was born in 1904 in Pennsylvania, and developed an interest in design early on. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he developed a modernist orientation to design, emphasizing functionality and craftsmanship. He worked as an industrial designer and architect at Richard Neutra’s firm in Los Angeles and eventually opened his own design firm in 1936. His major works of architecture included private homes, apartment buildings, and public housing, while his designs of furniture, textiles, and home fixtures sought to bring modernity and ease of use to everyday living. His public housing projects aimed to improve existing buildings, but also to build communities that functioned as one, creating what he named “Total Design”. His most famous works included the Aberdeen Apartments, Martin's House in Silver Lake, and the Allyne House in Los Angeles.
