Green Hills Kindergarten School

Green Hills Kindergarten School is an innovative educational architecture project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of playful design elements with functional learning spaces. Located in the suburbs of Mexico City, this 2,400-square-meter facility features a distinctive design characterized by concrete parallelepipeds that lean at various angles, creating a dynamic visual composition reminiscent of scattered toys across the landscape. The architectural concept, developed by Gerardo Broissin, deliberately challenges traditional educational facility design by incorporating tilted concrete walls that stimulate children's creativity and imagination. The preschool section demonstrates a more linear approach, utilizing reinforced concrete bays supported by exposed concrete piers, creating an elevated structure that facilitates natural water drainage and forms an ecological corridor for local wildlife. A significant innovation in the design is the three-part segmented classroom slabs with a north-facing toothed structure, which optimizes natural light distribution throughout the learning spaces. This thoughtful integration of natural illumination has been proven to enhance student attention, reading development, and information processing capabilities, as supported by educational research. The project, which opened in September 2012, seamlessly integrates with its surroundings through low-maintenance succulent landscaping, while the strategic positioning of buildings creates framed views of the surrounding forest. This exemplary educational facility design was recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2016, acknowledging its exceptional contribution to architectural innovation and educational space design.
