Graham Coughtry

Graham Coughtry was a Canadian artist who was born in Toronto in 1931 and passed away in 1999. He was a prominent figure in the Canadian art scene during the 1960s and 1970s and was associated with the Painters Eleven group, which was a collective of abstract painters who sought to establish a distinct Canadian art style. Coughtry's work, however, was more figurative in nature and he is best known for his depictions of the human form, often in distorted or fragmented ways. His unique style was characterized by bold colors, thick brushstrokes, and a sense of movement and energy. Coughtry's work was influenced by a variety of sources, including the works of the Old Masters, such as Rembrandt and Rubens, as well as contemporary artists like Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning. He was also interested in the human psyche and often explored themes of isolation, alienation, and the human condition in his art. Despite his success as an artist, Coughtry was known for his reclusive nature and was often described as a painter's painter. He rarely gave interviews or participated in public events and preferred to let his work speak for itself. Nevertheless, his impact on the Canadian art scene was significant and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists.

Graham Coughtry

Graham Coughtry is one of Canada’s foremost contemporary landscape painters. His works capture the beauty of the Canadian landscape, emphasizing its grandeur and timelessness. Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1956, Coughtry developed an interest in painting at an early age and throughout his youth he frequently visited Canadian national parks and reserves to study their scenery. He graduated with an MFA from the University of the Arts Philadelphia in 1981 and has since toured and exhibited nationally and internationally. Coughtry is noted for his large-scale oil-on-canvas landscapes and his distinct brushwork. He is most widely known for his series “The Impermanence of Nature”, which is composed of sixty-five oil paintings that depict elements of nature that have been altered by the hand of man. Other notable works by Coughtry include “Lac aux Castors”, “Lac de l’Estrapade” and “Lake O’Hara”.
