Gorenjska Chest

Gorenjska Chest is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Slovenian furniture craftsmanship, specifically designed to honor and modernize the cultural heritage of the Gorenjska region. This meticulously crafted storage piece, created by designers Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola, represents a sophisticated fusion of historical elements and modern design sensibilities. Constructed from locally harvested cherry wood, the chest features an intricate hexagonal pattern that incorporates traditional ethnographic elements, notably the heart symbol and carnation flower motifs, which are deeply significant to the region's cultural identity. The design's distinctive characteristic lies in its gradual transformation of patterns, where the hexagonal composition appears most defined on the upper surface before progressively diminishing in size and clarity along the sides, symbolizing the ethereal nature of cultural memory fading through time. The manufacturing process combines advanced technology with traditional craftsmanship, utilizing CNC cutting for precise pattern execution while maintaining the authenticity of hand-finishing techniques through meticulous brushing and oiling. The chest, measuring 120cm x 55cm x 55cm, incorporates thoughtful details such as walnut inlays and structural butterfly joints in its interior, demonstrating exceptional attention to both aesthetic and functional considerations. This piece, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition, exemplifies how contemporary furniture design can preserve cultural heritage while meeting modern aesthetic and functional requirements, serving as both a practical storage solution and a meaningful artistic statement about cultural preservation and innovation in furniture design.
