Gis Chair
Gis Chair is an innovative three-legged wooden seating design that masterfully bridges the realms of functional furniture and sculptural art. Created by Iranian designer Sepehr Mehrdadfar, this distinctive piece is meticulously crafted from two walnut logs with bronze feet, exemplifying exceptional craftsmanship and artistic vision. The chair's most striking feature is its main leg, whose graceful form draws inspiration from a woman's ponytail - reflected in its Persian name Gis, which translates to the tumble of a woman's hair. Despite its unconventional appearance, the chair maintains ergonomic excellence through carefully calculated curves and angles. The design deliberately preserves the natural wood knots and scars, incorporating these characteristics as integral aesthetic elements that enhance its sculptural presence. Measuring 600mm in width, 1000mm in depth, and 800mm in height, the Gis Chair represents a sophisticated exploration of solid wood possibilities while challenging traditional furniture design conventions. The piece emerged from a six-month development process in Tehran, forming part of the Konj-e-Hess collection, which investigates new aesthetic paradigms in Persian design. This remarkable fusion of functionality and artistry earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to contemporary furniture design through its innovative material use, cultural relevance, and artistic merit. The chair exemplifies a harmonious balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibilities, creating a unique spatial presence that transcends conventional furniture categorization.
