Gimbel Brothers
Gimbel Brothers was a prominent American department store chain that operated from 1887 to 1987. The company was founded by brothers Adam and Bernard Gimbel in Vincennes, Indiana, and later moved to New York City where it became one of the largest and most successful retailers in the country. Gimbel Brothers was known for its innovative marketing strategies, including the creation of the first department store Santa Claus, and for its commitment to customer service and satisfaction. The company was also a pioneer in the use of technology in retail, introducing innovations such as pneumatic tubes for cash and paperwork transport and the first automatic elevators in a department store. Gimbel Brothers was also known for its extensive advertising campaigns, including the famous slogan Wouldn't you rather be a Gimbel's customer?. Despite its success, Gimbel Brothers faced challenges in the mid-20th century as competition from other retailers increased and the rise of suburban shopping malls drew customers away from traditional department stores. The company ultimately merged with its longtime rival, Macy's, in 1986, and the Gimbel Brothers name was retired the following year.
