Giacchino Altobelli
Giacchino Altobelli was a prominent painter in the Baroque period, known for his religious and history paintings. Born in Freggio in 1687, he received his training in Parma under Giuseppe Baldrighi. Altobelli's artistic career flourished under the patronage of Duke Ranuccio II Farnese, for whom he painted numerous works, including altarpieces for the Oratorio di San Filippo Neri and the apse of the Sanctuary of Madonna della Steccata. Altobelli's works were characterized by their dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as their attention to detail and emotional intensity. His frescoes at the Sacro Monte della Verna and the Abbey of Chiaravalle della Colomba are particularly noteworthy for their grandeur and complexity. Altobelli was also appointed professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma and was a member of the Virtuosi al Pantheon in Rome. Despite his many achievements, Altobelli's legacy has been somewhat overshadowed by the work of his contemporaries, such as Caravaggio and Bernini. Nevertheless, his contributions to the Baroque style, particularly in the realm of religious and history painting, remain significant.
