Gerridae’s Waltz Interior Design
Gerridae's Waltz Interior Design is an innovative architectural and interior design project completed in 2016 in Tainan City, Taiwan, that masterfully addresses environmental challenges while creating a harmonious connection between built space and nature. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, draws its primary inspiration from the water strider insect (Gerridae), incorporating this biological influence into both functional and aesthetic elements of the 320-square-meter space. The project's most distinctive feature is its ingenious solution to seasonal flooding through the integration of a large pool garden landscape, which not only resolves practical drainage issues but also serves as a cooling mechanism for the surrounding environment. The architectural composition features four distinct areas extending from the main building, mimicking the characteristic legs of the Gerridae, while the exterior showcases sophisticated exposed concrete work that bridges modern and traditional architectural elements. The design thoughtfully incorporates four fundamental natural elements - sunlight, air, vegetation, and water - through strategic window placement for optimal air circulation, emergency escape routes that double as noise barriers from nearby highways, and artistic painted glass walls that evoke medieval church aesthetics. The project exemplifies sustainable architectural practices through its response to local environmental conditions and demonstrates exceptional spatial planning through its integration of functional requirements with biomorphic design principles.
