GEOMETRY Multifunctional Furniture
GEOMETRY Multifunctional furniture is an innovative collection of seven distinct wooden furniture pieces that ingeniously integrates mathematical principles into everyday furniture design, created by Chinese designer Yifeng Wang. This groundbreaking series transforms abstract mathematical concepts into tangible, interactive furniture pieces, each embodying specific mathematical principles such as the Pythagorean theorem, square mosaic, rectangle mosaic, triangle mosaic, ellipse, and pulley systems. The collection comprises a high table with rotating drawers based on square mosaic principles, a tea table utilizing rectangular mosaic mechanics, a transformable chest of drawers implementing triangle mosaic concepts, an elliptical bookcase with adjustable compartments, a geometrically-structured chair inspired by triangular stability, a pulley-system lamp, and a set of cups demonstrating the Pythagorean theorem through their volumes. Crafted primarily from solid wood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with minimal metal connections, the collection maintains a clean, sophisticated aesthetic while delivering educational value through interactive features. Each piece is meticulously designed with specific dimensions to effectively demonstrate its mathematical principle, with the high table measuring 510x510x950mm and other pieces proportionally sized for optimal functionality. The project, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition, represents a significant innovation in furniture design by successfully merging educational content with practical functionality, creating a unique intersection between mathematics, design, and daily life. This collection not only serves its primary function as furniture but also acts as an educational tool that makes mathematical principles more accessible and engaging through physical interaction.
