Gateway To Lofoten Appartments
Gateway to Lofoten Appartments is an innovative architectural project located in Roest, Lofoten, Norway, that masterfully blends traditional Norwegian fishing house aesthetics with contemporary design elements. The structure, designed by Manuela Hardy, spans 38 meters in width and 7.7 meters in depth, rising three stories high to accommodate both studio and larger residential units. The design's most distinctive feature is its creative interpretation of the traditional gabled roof, which is uniquely mirrored on the lower portion of the building, extending beyond the foundation wall to create an illusion of floating above the shoreline. This architectural composition pays homage to the region's rich heritage in cod fishing and stockfish production, particularly its historic trade connections with Italy, while introducing a progressive architectural language. The building employs a wooden frame construction methodology with wooden cladding, maintaining local building traditions while incorporating modern structural solutions. The lower mirrored roof section is ingeniously suspended from the same concrete slab that supports the upper levels, demonstrating technical innovation in structural design. This Iron A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category represents a significant achievement in contemporary Norwegian architecture, successfully addressing challenges of existing groundwork integration while creating a harmonious dialogue between traditional architectural elements and modern design sensibilities. The project exemplifies sustainable architecture through its thoughtful use of natural light, local materials, and contextual sensitivity, establishing a new architectural landmark that respects its cultural setting while pushing the boundaries of conventional design.
