Galerie Flechtheim

Galerie Flechtheim was not an artist, but rather an art dealer and gallery owner who played a significant role in the development and promotion of modern art in Europe during the early 20th century. Born in Germany in 1878, Flechtheim opened his first gallery in Düsseldorf in 1913, where he exhibited works by artists such as Max Beckmann, George Grosz, and Paul Klee. He later opened galleries in Berlin and Frankfurt, becoming one of the most influential art dealers of his time. Flechtheim was known for his keen eye for talent and his ability to recognize and promote emerging artists, many of whom went on to become some of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century. He was also known for his innovative exhibition designs and his efforts to bring modern art to a wider audience. Despite his success, Flechtheim's career was cut short by the rise of the Nazi party in Germany. As a Jew and a supporter of modern art, Flechtheim was targeted by the Nazis and forced to flee Germany in 1933. He eventually settled in London, where he continued to promote modern art until his death in 1957. Today, Galerie Flechtheim is remembered as a pioneering figure in the world of modern art, whose contributions helped to shape the course of art history.
