From Past To Future Residence
From Past To Future Residence is an award-winning interior design project completed in Suadiye, Istanbul, in July 2024, representing a sophisticated synthesis of historical preservation and contemporary spatial planning within a residential context of 155 square meters. Designed by Sema Yazici in collaboration with Yadigar Tanriverdi and Nurten Yildiz of Sakura Architecture, From Past To Future Residence exemplifies the eclectic design approach wherein cherished family heirlooms, accumulated accessories, and artworks spanning multiple generations are harmoniously integrated with modern architectural interventions and contemporary design elements. The residence underwent a significant spatial reconfiguration, transforming from its original four-plus-one unit configuration into a 3.5-room layout with one living room, incorporating a vestiary and dedicated laundry space to optimize functionality within the available area. The design philosophy underlying From Past To Future Residence emphasizes narrative-driven spatial composition, wherein each element contributes to a cohesive story that bridges temporal boundaries between past acquisitions and present-day living requirements. The material palette demonstrates a deliberate juxtaposition of timeless and contemporary finishes, employing black and white marble in entrance corridors and wet areas for understated elegance, while wooden parquet flooring in rooms and kitchen areas provides warmth and natural texture. From Past To Future Residence incorporates significant historical artifacts including a German-manufactured piano from 1923, a Russian samovar from 1914, and a chest produced in Diyarbakır in 1948, alongside accessories collected from international travels to China, Indonesia, and America, creating a cosmopolitan yet intimate domestic environment. The furniture strategy combines natural wood veneer with lacquered polished finishes to achieve smooth transitions between different aesthetic registers, while wallpaper applications introduce dynamism and prevent visual stagnation across various spatial zones. From Past To Future Residence demonstrates sophisticated color theory application, particularly in the living room where red fabrics, accessories, and buffet elements create dynamic energy against classical architectural features including marquetry parquet flooring, marble fireplace, wainscoting, and crystal chandeliers. The kitchen design adopts a functional minimalist approach enhanced by brass details, beveled glass elements, and golden marble veining on porcelain countertops, balancing utilitarian requirements with aesthetic refinement. From Past To Future Residence addresses the challenge of accommodating extensive personal collections within a relatively compact spatial envelope through meticulous planning that ensures every square meter yields both functional utility and visual elegance. The design employs strategic material transitions, utilizing marble in bathrooms paired with wallpaper to balance thermal and tactile qualities, while establishing color harmonies through furniture selections and introducing movement through patterned surfaces in smaller spaces. From Past To Future Residence features a distinctive living room configuration with a circular television unit and peach-toned wall color that creates a modern, striking environment, counterbalanced by the nostalgic presence of the antique piano, exemplifying the project's temporal dialogue. The corridor design incorporates black oval tags at door transitions to break visual monotony and extend the black marble motif from entrance areas into the living room, achieving overall spatial unity and visual flow throughout the residence. From Past To Future Residence represents a significant achievement in eclectic interior design, demonstrating how accumulated personal history can be respectfully integrated with contemporary spatial requirements without sacrificing either aesthetic coherence or functional performance. The project received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, recognizing its outstanding creativity, professional execution, and innovative integration of materials and spatial planning techniques. From Past To Future Residence embodies the design philosophy of Sakura Architecture, which draws inspiration from the Japanese concept of sakura (cherry blossoms) symbolizing the perfection found within life's fleeting cycles, translating this philosophical perspective into enduring, timeless interior environments. The residence successfully demonstrates how interior architecture can serve as a repository for personal and familial memory while simultaneously meeting contemporary standards for comfort, functionality, and aesthetic sophistication. From Past To Future Residence employs crystal chandeliers integrated with paneled wall details and antique furniture to create layered visual interest, while soft fabrics on sofas are enhanced with colorful and patterned cushions that introduce textural variety and chromatic vitality. The enclosed balcony area overlooking landscaped zones extends the usable living space while maintaining connection to exterior environments, contributing to the residence's overall sense of openness despite its compact footprint. From Past To Future Residence illustrates the potential for interior design to transcend mere spatial organization, functioning instead as a curatorial practice that honors personal history while embracing contemporary living patterns and aesthetic sensibilities. The project's success in harmonizing disparate temporal elements, from early twentieth-century artifacts to contemporary design interventions, demonstrates sophisticated understanding of material relationships, color theory, spatial proportion, and the psychological dimensions of domestic environments. From Past To Future Residence stands as a testament to the possibility of creating warm, personalized living spaces that resist homogenization while maintaining professional design standards and achieving recognition within the competitive international design community through its Bronze A' Design Award designation.
