Fritz Haller
Fritz Haller was a Swiss architect and designer who made significant contributions to modernist architecture and industrial design. Born in 1924 in Solothurn, Switzerland, Haller studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, where he later taught as a professor. He was a pioneer in the use of modular construction techniques and industrial materials in architecture, which he believed could make buildings more efficient, flexible, and affordable. Haller's most famous work is the USM Haller modular furniture system, which he designed in collaboration with the Swiss metalworking company USM in the 1960s. The system, which consists of metal tubes and panels that can be assembled in various configurations, has become a design classic and is still in production today. Haller also designed several buildings, including the Swiss Pavilion at the 1970 World Expo in Osaka, Japan, and the headquarters of the Swiss National Insurance Company in Lucerne. He was known for his minimalist aesthetic and his use of simple geometric forms, such as cubes and cylinders, in his designs. Haller passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on in the enduring popularity of his furniture and architecture.
