Friction Clutches For Land Vehicles
Friction clutches are mechanical devices that transmit power from a driving shaft to a driven shaft by means of frictional contact between two surfaces. In land vehicles, friction clutches are commonly used to engage and disengage the power transmission between the engine and the transmission system. The clutch is typically located between the engine and the gearbox and allows the driver to smoothly shift gears and control the speed of the vehicle. Friction clutches for land vehicles consist of several components, including a flywheel, a pressure plate, a clutch disc, and a release bearing. The flywheel is attached to the engine and provides a smooth surface for the clutch disc to engage with. The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel and applies pressure to the clutch disc, which in turn transmits power to the transmission. The release bearing is used to disengage the clutch when the driver depresses the clutch pedal. Friction clutches can be classified into two types: dry and wet. Dry clutches are typically used in manual transmissions and consist of a clutch disc that is coated with a friction material, such as organic, ceramic, or metallic. Wet clutches, on the other hand, are commonly used in automatic transmissions and are immersed in oil to reduce wear and dissipate heat. In order to ensure proper operation and longevity of the clutch, it is important to maintain the correct amount of pressure on the clutch disc. This can be achieved by adjusting the clutch pedal free play and periodically replacing the clutch components as needed.
