Freewheels For Motorcycles
A freewheel, also known as a one-way clutch, is a device that allows the rear wheel of a motorcycle to rotate freely in one direction while preventing it from turning in the opposite direction. This is achieved by using a set of rollers or sprags that engage with the inner and outer races of the freewheel in one direction, but disengage in the opposite direction. Freewheels are commonly used in motorcycles with kick-starters or electric starters, as they allow the engine to spin freely without turning the rear wheel. Freewheels for motorcycles come in a variety of designs and sizes, depending on the application and the type of motorcycle. Some freewheels are integrated into the starter motor, while others are separate components that are mounted on the transmission output shaft. The most common type of freewheel for motorcycles is the sprag clutch, which uses a set of sprags or rollers to engage with the inner and outer races of the freewheel. Other types of freewheels include the ramp-and-roller clutch, the ball-and-ramp clutch, and the pawl-and-ratchet clutch. Freewheels for motorcycles are important components that help to prevent damage to the engine and transmission. When a motorcycle is started, the engine spins the transmission, which in turn rotates the rear wheel. Without a freewheel, the rear wheel would continue to spin even after the engine is turned off, which could cause damage to the engine and transmission. Freewheels also help to prevent kickback when starting a motorcycle, which can be dangerous for the rider.
