Frank Hornby

Frank Hornby was a British toy designer and inventor who revolutionized the toy industry in the early 20th century. Born in 1863 in Liverpool, England, Hornby showed an early aptitude for mechanics and engineering. He began his career as a bookkeeper but spent his spare time tinkering with various mechanical designs. In 1901, he invented a construction toy that consisted of perforated metal strips, wheels, and gears, which could be assembled into various models. This invention, initially called Mechanics Made Easy, later became known as Meccano. Hornby's innovative toy encouraged children to explore engineering principles and sparked creativity through hands-on play. As Meccano gained popularity, Hornby expanded his product line to include model trains and other mechanical toys. His designs were known for their durability, precision, and educational value. Hornby's contributions to the toy industry earned him widespread recognition, including being appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1929. Today, he is remembered as a visionary toy designer whose creations continue to inspire and educate children around the world.
