Fraktur
Fraktur is a calligraphic hand and a typeface family characterized by its distinctive broken strokes and ornamental flourishes. Originating in the early 16th century, Fraktur emerged as a prominent style of blackletter script in Germany and remained widely used for German texts until the mid-20th century. The term Fraktur is derived from the Latin fractus, meaning broken, which aptly describes the angular, fractured appearance of the letterforms. Fraktur's design features sharp, angular lines and elaborate swashes, lending it a highly decorative and expressive quality. This typeface style was particularly favored for printed materials such as books, newspapers, and official documents, becoming an integral part of German visual culture. Fraktur's popularity began to decline in the early 20th century, partly due to the increasing use of more modern, sans-serif typefaces and the association of Fraktur with German nationalism during the Nazi era. Despite its eventual decline, Fraktur remains a significant part of typographic history, admired for its artistic merit and its role in shaping German textual tradition. Today, Fraktur is still used for decorative purposes, often evoking a sense of historical authenticity or Germanic heritage in designs such as book covers, certificates, and beer labels. Its enduring legacy continues to inspire contemporary typeface designers, who often create modern interpretations of Fraktur, adapting its distinctive style to suit current design sensibilities.
