Four & Forty Four Book, Poster, Light is a multifaceted design project that explores cultural superstitions through three distinct mediums, created by designer Daeki Shim. This innovative work examines the fascinating phenomenon of number-related taboos in East Asian and Western cultures, specifically focusing on the absence of gates numbered four, thirteen, and forty-four at Incheon International Airport. The project manifests in three complementary forms: a book measuring 150mm x 232mm spanning pages 177-192, a large-format poster (1400mm x 700mm), and an illuminated installation (570mm x 120mm x 235mm). The design critically engages with the cultural significance of the number four, which in East Asian languages shares pronunciation with the word for death, and Western trepidation surrounding the number thirteen. This sophisticated commentary on cultural superstitions was simultaneously exhibited across three distinct venues in Seoul: Cultural Station 284, Small House Big Door hotel, and Doosung Paper Gallery, each installation uniquely adapted to its specific context while maintaining thematic coherence. The project, completed between June and November 2015, demonstrates exceptional versatility in visual communication design, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category. The work stands as a compelling exploration of how cultural beliefs influence modern infrastructure and social behavior, presenting its critique through a sophisticated combination of typography, spatial design, and illumination techniques.
