Foundry Chill-moulds

Foundry chill-moulds are specialized tools used in the casting process of metals, particularly iron and steel. These moulds are designed to promote rapid solidification of the molten metal in specific areas of the casting, resulting in a more uniform and refined microstructure. The use of chill-moulds is especially important in the production of castings with complex geometries or where tight tolerances are required. Chill-moulds are typically made of materials with high thermal conductivity, such as copper or graphite, and are placed in strategic locations within the mould cavity. As the molten metal is poured into the mould, it comes into contact with the chill-moulds, which rapidly cool the metal and promote solidification. The resulting casting has a more uniform grain structure, improved mechanical properties, and reduced porosity. There are several types of chill-moulds, including insert chill-moulds, which are placed directly into the mould cavity, and jacketed chill-moulds, which are placed around the outside of the mould. Both types can be designed to have different shapes and sizes, depending on the specific requirements of the casting. The use of chill-moulds is a well-established practice in the foundry industry, and their benefits have been demonstrated in numerous applications. However, the design and implementation of chill-moulds requires careful consideration of factors such as the type of metal being cast, the geometry of the casting, and the desired properties of the final product.
