Fondazione Bertarelli Concert Hall
Fondazione Bertarelli Concert Hall is an architecturally significant concert venue located on the slopes of Mount Amiata in the Tuscan Maremma region, distinguished by its innovative organic design and acoustic excellence. This 350-seat performance space, completed in 2014, represents a masterful integration of form and function, utilizing golden ratio proportions to achieve natural acoustic amplification without mechanical intervention. The structure's distinctive ovoid shape, reminiscent of an olive with its attached leaf when viewed from above, emerges from the landscape as a harmonious blend of contemporary architecture and natural surroundings. The hall's construction features a sophisticated combination of materials, including reinforced concrete, CORTEN steel, and wooden elements, creating a multi-layered composition that serves both aesthetic and acoustic purposes. The venue comprises two main sections forming a unified shape: a theater and a multipurpose hall, with a total volume of 7,813.34 cubic meters. The design incorporates an underground level at -4.68 meters housing amenities and services, while the main theater space rises organically from the terrain, culminating in a sophisticated roof structure reaching +5.60 meters above ground. The project, which earned the prestigious Gold A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, successfully replaced an earlier plan for nine residential buildings, demonstrating exemplary environmental sensitivity and architectural innovation. The concert hall's sophisticated design enables optimal acoustic performance through its carefully calculated proportions and material selection, while its integration with the surrounding olive grove and natural landscape represents a remarkable achievement in sustainable architectural design.
