Flux Coated Metal Rods

Flux coated metal rods, also known as welding electrodes, are a type of welding consumable used in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or stick welding. These rods are made of a metal core wire that is coated with a flux material. The flux coating serves several purposes, including stabilizing the arc, protecting the weld pool from atmospheric contamination, and providing a slag layer that covers the weld bead and protects it from oxidation as it cools. The metal core wire of a flux coated metal rod is typically made of steel or another alloy that is compatible with the base metal being welded. The flux material is a mixture of various chemicals, including metal oxides, silicates, and fluorides. The exact composition of the flux coating depends on the specific application and the type of base metal being welded. During welding, the flux coating on the metal rod melts and forms a protective gas shield around the weld pool. This shield prevents atmospheric gases such as oxygen and nitrogen from contaminating the weld, which can cause defects such as porosity or cracking. As the weld cools, the flux coating forms a slag layer that covers the weld bead and protects it from oxidation. Flux coated metal rods are available in a variety of sizes and types, each designed for specific welding applications. Some common types include low hydrogen, cellulose, and basic electrodes. Low hydrogen electrodes are used for welding high-strength steels and other critical applications where low levels of hydrogen are required to prevent cracking. Cellulose electrodes are used for welding pipe and other structural steel applications. Basic electrodes are used for welding stainless steel and other specialty alloys.
