Ferrying Compound Bookstore

Ferrying Compound Bookstore is a multifunctional interior space and exhibition design project that synthesizes traditional Chinese water town aesthetics with contemporary parametric design technologies to create an innovative community-oriented literary and cultural venue spanning 1500 square meters across two floors in Huangge Town, Nansha Economic Development Zone, Guangzhou, China. Designed by Xixi Quan, Kau Chan, and Junming Chen of the MUST Design Digital Construction Laboratory at Macau University of Science and Technology, Ferrying Compound Bookstore employs an abstract representation of a traditional water town block as its fundamental spatial organizing principle, wherein a metaphorical river serves as the connective element linking distinct functional zones dedicated to books, merchandise, and salon activities, while incorporating architectural elements such as small bridges, village houses, miniature squares, Chinese octagonal pavilions, ferry crossings, and the mythical Qilin beast. The first floor embodies traditional spatial logic through these vernacular architectural references, whereas the second floor introduces contemporary technological elements including parametric subway train structures, augmented reality experiences, and modern tea service facilities, thereby establishing a deliberate contrast between historical and modern design languages. The design emerged from comprehensive qualitative research conducted among Nansha community residents, analyzed through MAXQDA software, which identified strong demand for composite parent-child spaces that facilitate simultaneous activities for children and adults, continuation of traditional cultural contexts, and intimate aesthetic gathering spaces distinct from conventional libraries and community centers. The material palette reflects both budgetary constraints and local building traditions, incorporating exposed ceilings, cement self-leveling, terrazzo, clay bricks, and granite, while structural elements including houses with sloping roofs, octagonal pavilions, and subway trains are composed of simple steel structure lines, with the rhythmic subway train forms generated parametrically using Grasshopper software. The octagonal pavilion in the salon area presents particular design complexity through its mortise and tenon structural system combined with indirect lighting to express the coexistence of traditional construction methods and contemporary lighting aesthetics, while the pixelated Qilin mythical beast is assembled from modular wooden components and wooden boat display stands are custom-fabricated in specialized boat workshops to ensure authentic local aesthetic atmosphere. The children's area features a subway station theme wherein the train body comprises undulating steel structure lines creating spatial rhythm that accommodates the body movements of children across different age groups, with parametric design ensuring precise dimensional relationships that prevent entrapment while encouraging climbing, hanging, and interactive play, including operable train doors and a driver's position that facilitate imaginative engagement. The spatial organization functions as a water town market fusion of ancient and modern, Eastern and Western influences, providing reading, learning, work space, tea, coffee, light meals, augmented reality experiences, and workshops within an environment rich in imaginative scene experiences, where houses flanking the metaphorical river contain books and cultural products, wooden boat booths create dynamic spatial qualities, and the salon area terminus features steps, octagonal pavilions, wooden boats, houses, and sloping roofs that establish a village square gathering atmosphere conducive to reading, conversation, and social interaction. Construction commenced in November 2022 with completion in April 2023, employing factory prefabrication for steel structures and metal keel components of the fort-style white arch book corridor to optimize cost efficiency, while the octagonal pavilion required on-site completion with workers to balance budget constraints and construction timelines. The design addresses the challenge of defining a composite bookstore that functions as a highly utilized community literary living room through strategic functional programming, product and book category curation emphasizing literature, popular science, psychology, art, life, children, and youth titles, and spatial aesthetic formulation that generates resident sense of belonging through continuation of traditional cultural contexts, provision of distinctive handmade and aesthetic life products differentiating the venue from conventional retail environments, and creation of an elegant, relaxed atmosphere supporting literature and art salons, workshops, and discovery of personal creative potential. Ferrying Compound Bookstore received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, with the Silver designation recognizing top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation through aesthetic sophistication, functional effectiveness, original innovations, discerning emotional elements, and insightful creativity that demonstrate outstanding expertise, talent, and acuity while benefiting and advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology. The project exemplifies how parametric design technologies, traditional craftsmanship, and cultural research can converge to produce community-serving spaces that honor local heritage while embracing contemporary design methodologies, establishing a model for composite bookstores that function as literary living rooms fostering social cohesion, cultural continuity, and aesthetic enrichment within residential communities through carefully calibrated spatial experiences that accommodate diverse user groups and activities within unified yet contrasting design vocabularies.
