Fear Chair
Fear Chair is an innovative conceptual furniture design that challenges conventional seating paradigms by incorporating copper nails within a transparent glass block structure. Created by Turkish designer Derya Geylani Vuruşan, this provocative piece serves as both a functional seat and an artistic statement about confronting personal fears. The chair, measuring 25 cm in width, 35 cm in length, and standing 60 cm high, employs the sophisticated patte de verre glass-making technique combined with strategically placed copper nails, supported by four stainless steel legs. This unique combination of materials represents a significant technical achievement, as copper is the only metal that can be successfully embedded within glass without causing structural compromise. The design draws inspiration from nature's defensive mechanisms, such as hedgehogs and thorny roses, transforming these typically deterrent elements into an invitation for psychological exploration. The transparent glass construction allows users to clearly observe the embedded nails while seated, creating a powerful juxtaposition between perceived danger and actual safety. Winner of the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, the Fear Chair demonstrates practical applications beyond its artistic merit, particularly in professional settings such as corporate environments where it can be utilized as a tool for assessing candidates' reactions and attitudes during job interviews. This innovative piece exemplifies the intersection of functional furniture design with conceptual art, challenging users to confront and overcome their preconceptions while offering a unique seating experience.
