F Residential Building

F Residential Building is an innovative architectural project located in Chiba prefecture, Japan, that seamlessly integrates residential, commercial, and community spaces to foster social connections and sustainable urban living. This Silver A' Design Award-winning structure, designed by Keisuke Fukui and Keisuke Morikawa, represents a thoughtful response to the challenges of aging suburban communities, particularly in areas with high concentrations of new residents. The building's distinctive design features a forest-like architectural approach that visualizes and strengthens local plant-sharing networks, incorporating diagonal atrium openings and strategic placement of greenery to maximize natural light penetration. The structure spans 168.79 square meters of total floor area across multiple levels, with the ground floor deliberately designed as an open, welcoming space that houses a café and office area where local residents can freely gather. The building's innovative spatial arrangement employs a sandwich configuration of terraces and interior spaces, creating an immersive forest-like living experience throughout the structure. Meeting Japan's highest standards for building performance, it has been certified as excellent long-term housing, featuring superior structural integrity, thermal insulation, and adaptable design elements. The project, completed in December 2022, exemplifies tactical urbanism principles by transforming a private residence into a community catalyst, addressing suburban isolation through architectural intervention. The design's sophisticated approach to community building is manifested through shared spaces that naturally evolve into informal gathering spots, from an impromptu café to a communal library, demonstrating how thoughtful architectural design can strengthen social fabric and cultural sustainability in suburban contexts.
