Exhaust Bypasses
Exhaust bypasses, also known as exhaust cutouts, are mechanical devices that allow the exhaust gases to be redirected away from the muffler and exhaust system. This is done by opening a valve that is installed in the exhaust system, which allows the exhaust gases to bypass the muffler and exit the vehicle without being muffled. Exhaust bypasses are commonly used in high-performance vehicles and racing cars, as they can increase the power and performance of the engine by reducing the back pressure in the exhaust system. Exhaust bypasses are typically installed in the exhaust system near the muffler, and can be operated manually or electronically. Manual exhaust bypasses are operated by a lever or switch that is located inside the vehicle, while electronic exhaust bypasses are controlled by a computer or remote control. When the valve is closed, the exhaust gases are forced through the muffler and exhaust system, which reduces the noise and emissions produced by the engine. However, when the valve is opened, the exhaust gases are redirected away from the muffler and exhaust system, which increases the noise and emissions produced by the engine. Exhaust bypasses are often used in conjunction with other performance upgrades, such as high-flow exhaust systems, headers, and catalytic converters. By reducing the back pressure in the exhaust system, these upgrades can increase the power and performance of the engine, while also improving the sound and appearance of the vehicle. However, it is important to note that exhaust bypasses may not be legal in all areas, as they can increase the noise and emissions produced by the vehicle.
