Exhale Public Plaza
Exhale Public Plaza is a groundbreaking urban landscape design that exemplifies the seamless integration of public art, environmental consciousness, and community engagement in contemporary urban planning. Located in downtown Chapel Hill, this innovative 1,670-square-meter plaza represents a significant advancement in pedestrian-oriented landscape design, featuring a sophisticated sculptural fog fountain as its centerpiece. The plaza's defining element is its dynamic sculptural installation measuring 19,812mm in width, 1,829mm in depth, and 1,524mm in height, crafted from custom-folded perforated stainless steel that creates an ethereal interplay of mist and LED lighting. This masterwork, designed by Mikyoung Kim, celebrates the natural hydrological cycle through its innovative water management system, transforming liquid water into a cloud-like state while providing a cooling microclimate for visitors. The plaza's distinctive paving pattern, inspired by wind movement diagrams, radiates from the central mist fountain, creating an immersive experience that changes with the seasons and times of day. The project, completed in 2013, earned the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, recognizing its exceptional contribution to urban space activation and environmental design. The plaza's sophisticated integration of technology, including choreographed LED lighting and advanced mist systems, creates a transformative public space that serves as both a functional gathering area and an artistic statement about environmental consciousness.
