Eugen Batz

Eugen Batz was a German expressionist painter and printmaker. His art was characterized by heavy brushstrokes, symbolic imagery and powerful color palettes. He was born in 1890 in Vienna and died in 1942 in Berlin. During his lifetime, he made a strong contribution to the art world in Germany. His main body of work is known for its haunting and deeply personal artwork, which often emphasizes his exploration of inner anguish and despair. One of his most famous pieces is the painting, ‘The Urge of Despair’, which explores themes of depression and desolation. He also created numerous lithographs, etchings and ink drawings, and many of his works focused on exploring the human condition. Another notable work of his is ‘The Suicide’, an engraving depicting a man’s suicide. These works explore the darker side of human emotion, often with a sense of sombre grace.
