Eternal Dragon Carpet As Art

Eternal Dragon Carpet As Art

Eternal Dragon Carpet as Art is a handcrafted textile masterpiece that exemplifies the intersection of functional design and artistic expression, created by Kazakhstani designer Assel Baimakhan. This distinctive carpet, measuring 2500mm by 3500mm with a 10mm pile height, masterfully combines viscose and wool materials to create a sophisticated visual narrative centered around the mythological dragon motif. The design's conceptual foundation draws from the universal presence of dragons in global folklore and mythology, presenting these legendary creatures as a unifying cultural thread across diverse civilizations. The piece features a graphically rendered dragon silhouette executed in viscose against a wool background, encompassed by a 100mm border that frames the work like a painting, elevating its status as an art object. The carpet's creation employs traditional hand-knotting techniques, where skilled artisans weave patterns from memory without using predetermined patterns, contributing to its uniqueness and authenticity. This labor-intensive process, combined with the deliberate fusion of different textile materials, results in a piece that promises longevity spanning decades or even centuries. The work, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition in the Furniture Design category, represents a significant achievement in contemporary carpet design, successfully bridging the gap between functional floor covering and decorative art while exploring themes of cultural interconnectedness and craftsmanship excellence.
