Estrildidae

The word Estrildidae is derived from its Latin name Estrildes, which belongs to the Estrildinae family. It is a finch-like bird with a small body and long tail feathers. Estrildidae was first used in 1760 by French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in his book ‘Encyclopédie Méthodique’. The origin of the word is likely related to the Latin word ‘strix’, which translates to ‘night owl’. Subsequently, the term ‘Estrildes’ appeared in the same book. Since then, the word has been used to refer to a group of finch-type birds. From a linguistic perspective, the word can be analyzed as two morphemes; the root ‘estri’ and the suffix ‘ldidae’. Although the origins of the root are unknown, the suffix ‘ldidae’ is derived from the Greek suffix ‘oidos’, which means ‘resembling’ or ‘similar to’. From a historical perspective, Estrildidae has evolved over time with its usage in various scientific publications and books. With regard to its morphology, the word is an eponym of the Estrildinae family. In terms of its pragmatics, Estrildidae has also become a technical and scientific term used to refer to the family of finch-like birds.

Estrildidae is a family of small passerine birds found mainly in the Old World Tropics, but also in parts of Australia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. Members of this family are typically small in size and have a slender, conical bill. These birds also have a distinctive tail pattern, with the tail feathers being longer than the wings. The most common species of Estrildidae are the weavers and munias, which are found in Africa and parts of Asia. Other species include the waxbills, firefinches, and ricebirds. Estrildidae are mainly seed-eaters and nest in shallow cups made of grass.
