Espacio Kaab House

Espacio Kaab House

Espacio Kaab House is an architecturally significant residential project completed in 2021 in Nogueras, Colima, México, that masterfully integrates contemporary design principles with natural surroundings. This innovative dwelling, designed by architect Matia Di Frenna Müller, exemplifies a harmonious fusion of Japanese architectural elements with Mexican vernacular techniques, creating a unique spatial experience that blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The 4,316-square-foot structure, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to its challenging topographical context adjacent to a river and historical buildings. The design philosophy emphasizes the phenomenological experience of space through thoughtfully selected materials, including stone, earth, steel, and concrete, which create a visual and conceptual dialogue with the natural environment. The project's material palette was carefully curated to minimize maintenance requirements, utilizing durable materials like stone and Chukum stucco for exterior applications while reserving more delicate elements such as wood and wicker for protected areas. The house's distinctive character emerges from its response to the site's complex topography, resulting in a series of interconnected spaces that offer compelling views and seamlessly integrate with the surrounding landscape. The design process involved meticulous site analysis and client consultation, reflecting a deep commitment to creating a residence that serves both as a functional living space and as an exemplar of contemporary architectural design that respects its cultural and environmental context.
