Escudellers Residential House

Escudellers Residential House

Escudellers Residential House is a meticulously renovated residential dwelling located in the historic center of Barcelona, Spain, situated in a building dating back to 1840 on the culturally significant Escudellers Street, which historically served as the center for the medieval potters' guild. This 104-square-meter architectural masterpiece, designed by Jofre Roca, exemplifies a harmonious blend of historical preservation and contemporary interpretation, earning recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design. The renovation project prioritized the preservation and restoration of original building elements, incorporating traditional construction techniques while introducing modern adaptations. Notable features include artisanally crafted moldings with unconventional extended designs that blur traditional boundaries, appearing as if sculpted directly onto walls and ceilings. The interior layout was thoughtfully reconfigured to optimize natural lighting, with the removal of two partitions creating an open-concept living space that connects the kitchen, dining room, and living areas. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its restoration work, including the careful recovery of original iron fittings and hydraulic pavements, which required precise reconstruction of the building's slab. The high ceilings and strategic use of patios facilitate abundant natural illumination throughout the space, creating an urban sanctuary that contrasts with the bustling city environment. The rehabilitation project, completed in 2018, showcases innovative solutions for contemporary living while maintaining the building's historical integrity, with particular emphasis on the preservation of period-specific architectural elements that contribute to the property's cultural value.
