This groundbreaking social design solution, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Social Design category, addresses the critical need for accessible communication tools in a country where resources for the hearing-impaired community are limited. The system employs advanced machine learning technology trained on a comprehensive dataset of 400 videos encompassing frequently used words in Mexican Sign Language, categorized and labeled for optimal recognition. The technical architecture involves sophisticated pose prediction processes utilizing ML pipe pose estimation, enabling the system to analyze and interpret sign language gestures frame by frame without human intervention. The platform's development involved rigorous manual frame selection to enhance prediction accuracy, resulting in a robust system capable of real-time translation between Mexican Sign Language and written Spanish. This inclusive design solution, developed over six months at the Universidad de Monterrey, represents a significant advancement in accessibility technology, particularly considering that approximately 5% of the global population experiences disabling hearing loss. The project's commitment to open accessibility is demonstrated through its freely available research findings, recognition model, and dataset, enabling other developers, technology companies, and educational institutions to build upon this foundation and create additional inclusion tools for the non-hearing community.
