Empty Parts Hair Salon
Empty Parts Hair Salon is an innovative interior design project that reimagines the traditional hair salon concept through a sophisticated exploration of negative space and memory. Located in Tianjin, China, this architectural masterpiece spans two floors, encompassing 53 square meters on the first floor and 104 square meters on the second floor, with respective heights of 4.55 and 4.65 meters. The design philosophy centers on the concept of empty parts, drawing inspiration from the temporary vacant spaces created by hair clips during styling, metaphorically transforming these voids into vessels of memory and temporal experience. The salon's distinctive aesthetic employs a carefully curated material palette of recycled elm wood, handmade clay bricks, hot-rolled steel, and concrete, creating an industrial yet warmly nostalgic atmosphere. The spatial organization deliberately separates functions between floors, with the ground level housing a minimalist waiting area featuring a prominent wooden table and towering lampposts, while the second floor accommodates primary styling services in naturally lit spaces overlooking a park. The design overcomes structural challenges through innovative geometric blocks that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, with strategically hollowed sections wrapped in wood to emphasize the concept of emptiness. This thoughtful approach to spatial design earned the project a Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional contribution to commercial interior design. The project, completed in October 2016, demonstrates a remarkable synthesis of practical functionality and conceptual depth, creating an environment that transcends the typical salon experience to offer clients a contemplative space for personal transformation.
