Emoticon
Emoticon is a portmanteau of emotion and icon, referring to a pictorial representation of a facial expression using characters—usually punctuation marks, numbers, and letters—to express a person's feelings, mood, or reaction in electronic communication. Emoticons are used to convey non-verbal cues in text-based conversations, helping to clarify the tone or intent of a message. The concept of emoticons dates back to the early days of the internet, with the first documented use attributed to computer scientist Scott Fahlman in 1982, who proposed using :-) and :-( to distinguish jokes from serious statements in online bulletin boards. Since then, emoticons have evolved and become an integral part of digital communication, with a wide variety of designs and variations emerging to represent a range of emotions and actions. They have transcended cultural and linguistic barriers, allowing people worldwide to express themselves in a concise and universally understood manner. The use of emoticons has also been studied in the context of human-computer interaction, with research suggesting that they can enhance the perceived empathy and warmth of computer-mediated communication. While emoticons have been largely superseded by more sophisticated emoji in recent years, they remain a classic and enduring feature of online communication, reflecting the ongoing need for users to convey emotional nuance in text-based interactions.
